Our Mothers

"Some blessings come soon, some come late, and some don’t come until heaven; but for those who embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ, they come" (Elder Jeffrey R. Holland).

I am so grateful for my mom—and my dad and my siblings and lots of other wonderful people; but for right now I’ll just focus on Mom because today is Mother’s day, which means we have all probably spent a little extra time thinking about our mothers!  Personally, I try to express appreciation and love to my parents more than once a year, but it is nice to have special holidays like these for some additional celebration.  Thank goodness for all of the dutiful, loving, and perhaps a little imperfect mothers that have blessed and impacted so many lives.

But not everyone gets to have their mom on Mother’s Day.  Some moms have been swept into heaven; some moms have chosen to leave their families; some moms are on their own struggling to make ends meet; some are still waiting for the opportunity to be moms.  Some moms are sick, some moms are dying, some moms pray for wayward children to come home, some moms are selfish, some moms are abusive, some moms are widows, some moms are single, some moms go unappreciated, some moms are abused, some moms need help they can’t get.  We live in a world full of broken hearts and broken families.  Some haven’t even got a family.  My heart goes out to all of those people.

I am lucky enough to have two parents and a happy family (besides the occasional skirmish I admit).  I know that very few are as lucky as that.  Every time I finish talking on the phone, or say goodbye as I walk out the door, I try to make sure the last thing I say to them is “I love you!”  Because I do!  I want that to be the last thing they hear me say. I know I take them all for granted.  How often we all take each other for granted!

For all the motherless, fatherless, childless, single, widowed, divorced, hurt, struggling, suffering people out there, thankfully we have the Atonement.  I don’t know why our families have to be so battered and bruised or incomplete, I don’t know why so many choose to abuse their agency, I don’t know why we don’t all get to have a mother on Mother’s day.  I do know that God will not hold back any blessings from us, however long they may take to reach us.  For those that don't have a mother today or next year, we have a Savior and Heavenly Parents that have provided a way for each of to have all promised privileges and opportunities regardless of our circumstances now.

Through the Atonement our families can be together forever.  I don’t know how it will all work out in the end, but in the end I know that it will all work out!  May God continue to bless us now and forever.  And happy Mother's Day!

  1. Lexy, thank you so much for this thoughtful post. You have a good, broad, and understanding perspective of the happiness or hurt stirred in the hearts of people as they think of their mothers. Thank you for your inspiring wisdom and testimony of the Atonement. :)
